Full Curriculum
A module-by-module breakdown of the content, the format, and the reasoning behind each part of the curriculum.
Before diving into processes, it helps to understand how a franchise system is structured as a whole. This module maps out the relationship between a franchisor and their network of franchisees from an operational perspective.
You will explore how authority flows through the system, how accountability is assigned, and why operational decisions made at the top of the structure have cascading effects at the location level. The module includes real-world examples of how different franchise structures handle the same operational challenges in different ways.
The operations manual is often described as the backbone of a franchise system. In practice, it is much more than a reference document. It is the primary mechanism through which a franchisor communicates how every aspect of the operation should be run.
This module examines what a well-structured operations manual contains, how it is written for clarity and usability, and how it is updated as the system evolves. Participants work through examples of manual sections to understand what separates a useful manual from one that nobody reads.
Standard operating procedures, often called SOPs, are the individual building blocks of a franchise operations system. Each SOP covers a specific task, process, or situation. Together they form the procedural layer that staff at every location follow.
This module focuses on how SOPs are written so they are actually used. A procedure that is too long, too vague, or too complex will not be followed consistently. Participants learn the principles behind effective SOP writing and review examples of procedures that work and ones that do not.
Brand standards define what the franchise looks and feels like to the customer. They cover everything from the physical appearance of locations to the way staff greet customers to how products are presented. Maintaining those standards across a large network is one of the central operational challenges in franchising.
This module explores how brand standards are defined, documented, and enforced. It also looks at what happens when standards slip and how franchisors design systems to catch that drift early.
Every new franchisee goes through some form of initial training before opening their location. The quality of that training has a direct effect on how well the location performs operationally in its first year. This module examines how initial and ongoing training programs are designed within franchise systems.
The focus is on the structure and mechanics of training rather than the content of any specific franchise. Participants learn how training programs are built to be scalable, repeatable, and effective across different contexts.
Compliance in a franchise system means something specific: confirming that each location is operating according to the standards and procedures set by the franchisor. Audits are the primary tool for doing that. This module covers how audit programs are designed, executed, and used to drive improvement rather than just identify problems.
Participants will look at different audit formats — scheduled, unannounced, self-assessment — and examine how the results of audits feed back into the operational improvement cycle.
Each session runs across two days. Day one covers the first three modules. Day two covers modules four through six. There is a group discussion at the end of each module and time built in for questions throughout.
Materials are provided in printed format and are yours to keep. The sessions are small by design — this keeps the discussions practical and allows the facilitator to address specific questions directly rather than staying at a general level.
